# Emoji status


Telegram allows users, channels and supergroups to set an emoticon or a [custom emoji](/api/custom-emoji.md) as status, to show next to their name in chats and profiles.

### Setting an emoji status

Use [account.updateEmojiStatus](/method/account.updateEmojiStatus.md) to change the status emoji of your profile.  

* Pass [emojiStatus](/constructor/emojiStatus.md) to set a [custom emoji](/api/custom-emoji.md).
* Pass [inputEmojiStatusCollectible](/constructor/inputEmojiStatusCollectible.md) to set an [owned collectible gift &raquo;](#collectibles-as-emoji-statuses) as emoji status.
  Note that once set, the status will be returned to users as a [emojiStatusCollectible](/constructor/emojiStatusCollectible.md) constructor, instead (which **cannot** be passed to [account.updateEmojiStatus](/method/account.updateEmojiStatus.md), and must be converted to an [inputEmojiStatusCollectible](/constructor/inputEmojiStatusCollectible.md) first).  
  The emoji status will also alter some properties of the profile page itself through **pattern\_document\_id**, and the other fields.  
* Pass [emojiStatusEmpty](/constructor/emojiStatus.md) to remove the currently set [custom emoji](/api/custom-emoji.md).

The newly set [EmojiStatus](/type/EmojiStatus.md) constructor will be contained in the `emoji_status` field of the [user](/constructor/user.md) constructor, and other users will receive an [updateUserEmojiStatus](/constructor/updateUserEmojiStatus.md).  

Other logged-in clients will also receive an [updateRecentEmojiStatuses](/constructor/updateRecentEmojiStatuses.md) update, indicating that the recent status emoji list has changed.  

Recently used emoji statuses can be fetched using [account.getRecentEmojiStatuses](/method/account.getRecentEmojiStatuses.md), and the list can be cleared using [account.clearRecentEmojiStatuses](/method/account.clearRecentEmojiStatuses.md).  

Note that the custom emoji selection UI should offer a list of categories to quickly filter results by a (list of) emojis, or by some other criteria, see [here&nbsp;&raquo;](/api/emoji-categories.md) for more info.  

#### Setting an emoji status in channels and supergroups

**Only** channel/supergroup custom emoji [stickersets](/constructor/stickerSet.md), i.e. [stickersets](/constructor/stickerSet.md) with the `channel_emoji_status` flag set, can be used in channel/supergroup custom emoji statuses using [channels.updateEmojiStatus](/method/channels.updateEmojiStatus.md). 

Note, however, that some specific [custom emojis](/api/custom-emoji.md) from channel/supergroup custom emoji stickersets cannot be used as channel/supergroup statuses: use [account.getChannelRestrictedStatusEmojis](/method/account.getChannelRestrictedStatusEmojis.md) to fetch the full list of IDs of custom emojis that cannot be used in channel/supergroup statuses.

Channels/supergroups gain the ability to change their status emoji only after reaching at least the [boost level](/api/boost.md) specified in the [`channel_emoji_status_level_min`&nbsp;&raquo;](/api/config.md#channel-emoji-status-level-min)/[`group_emoji_status_level_min`&nbsp;&raquo;](/api/config.md#group-emoji-status-level-min) config parameters.

Bots can set the emoji status of a user in two ways.

- By emitting a [web_app_set_emoji_status](/api/web-events.md#web-app-set-emoji-status) event in a [mini app](/api/bots/webapps.md), containing the ID of the [custom emoji](/api/custom-emoji.md) to use as status, and an optional TTL for the status, see [here &raquo;](/api/web-events.md#web-app-set-emoji-status) for more info on the event.
- By using [bots.updateUserEmojiStatus](/method/bots.updateUserEmojiStatus.md): to use this method, bots must first ask and obtain permission from the user to manage their emoji status without using explicit [web_app_set_emoji_status](/api/web-events.md#web-app-set-emoji-status) events.  
  To request permission, emit a [web_app_request_emoji_status_access](/api/web-events.md#web-app-request-emoji-status-access), and follow the [full flow &raquo;](/api/web-events.md#web-app-request-emoji-status-access), which on success, leads the user to invoke the [bots.toggleUserEmojiStatusPermission](/method/bots.toggleUserEmojiStatusPermission.md) method, passing `enabled=true` and the ID of the bot.  
  
  Once permission is obtained, the [userFull](/constructor/userFull.md).`bot_can_manage_emoji_status` flag of the bot will be set for the user, and the [bots.updateUserEmojiStatus](/method/bots.updateUserEmojiStatus.md) may be invoked by the bot to change the emoji status of the user.

A set of standard statuses for users/(channels/supergroups) can be fetched by passing [inputStickerSetEmojiDefaultStatuses](/constructor/inputStickerSetEmojiDefaultStatuses.md)/[inputStickerSetEmojiChannelDefaultStatuses](/constructor/inputStickerSetEmojiChannelDefaultStatuses.md) to [messages.getStickerSet](/method/messages.getStickerSet.md), as specified in the [stickerset documentation&nbsp;&raquo;](/api/stickers.md).  

[account.getDefaultEmojiStatuses](/method/account.getDefaultEmojiStatuses.md) can also be used to get a list of featured emoji statuses, from multiple featured custom emoji stickersets.  
[account.getChannelDefaultEmojiStatuses](/method/account.getChannelDefaultEmojiStatuses.md) is the equivalent method for channel/supergroup emoji statuses.

[Owned or hosted collectible gifts &raquo;](/api/gifts.md#hosted-collectible-gifts) may be set as emoji statuses: use [account.getCollectibleEmojiStatuses](/method/account.getCollectibleEmojiStatuses.md) to obtain the list of available collectible emoji statuses (as [emojiStatusCollectible](/constructor/emojiStatusCollectible.md) objects), choose one, convert it to an [inputEmojiStatusCollectible](/constructor/inputEmojiStatusCollectible.md) and [set it as described above &raquo;](#setting-an-emoji-status), using [account.updateEmojiStatus](/method/account.updateEmojiStatus.md)/[channels.updateEmojiStatus](/method/channels.updateEmojiStatus.md).

Collectible emoji statuses are not compatible with [custom profile palette/patterns &raquo;](/api/colors.md): setting a collectible emoji status will remove any previously configured profile palette/pattern, and vice versa, setting a custom profile palette/pattern will remove any previously configured collectible emoji status.
